White Swiss Shepherd breed club
White Swiss Shepherd
The BBS club on BreedClubs: live rankings, show results, selected breeders and available puppies. One breed, one community, real tools.
The White Swiss Shepherd is an elegant herding dog with a striking pure white coat, recognised by the FCI in 2011 under standard 347. Balanced, attentive and deeply attached to its family, it combines the working aptitudes of its shepherd ancestors with a remarkably gentle temperament. Versatile and athletic, it thrives equally in active homes, sport disciplines and assistance work, provided it receives consistent education and meaningful daily activity.
History
The breed traces back to the white-coated specimens born within German Shepherd litters during the early twentieth century. Long marginalised in Europe due to a coat-colour disqualification, the white shepherd was preserved primarily in North America from the 1930s onward, where dedicated breeders developed distinct lines. Imports into Switzerland during the 1970s prompted a structured breeding programme, and in 1991 the Swiss Kennel Club opened a national registry for the breed. Switzerland subsequently became the patron country, leading to provisional FCI recognition in 2003 and definitive acceptance in 2011 under FCI 347, Group 1. Today the White Swiss Shepherd enjoys a steady following across Europe, with healthy populations in France, Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries and Scandinavia.
Character
The White Swiss Shepherd is a sensitive, intelligent and highly people-oriented dog. It forms intense bonds with its family and tolerates solitude poorly, which makes lifestyle compatibility a key consideration for prospective owners. Although confident at home, it tends to be reserved with strangers without showing aggression, and early socialisation is essential to nurture a stable adult temperament. Its herding heritage gives it strong working drives, attentive observation skills and a clear sensitivity to the handler's voice and body language. Harsh methods are counterproductive: this is a breed that responds best to patient, positive and consistent education. With balanced guidance, it becomes an exceptional companion for children, sport and family life.
Health
The White Swiss Shepherd is generally a robust breed, but several hereditary conditions warrant careful screening within breeding programmes. Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia remain the priority orthopaedic concerns, and X-ray readings under official protocols are strongly recommended before mating. Genetic testing for the MDR1 mutation, degenerative myelopathy (DM) and the von Willebrand disease variants is widely practised by serious kennels. Coat and skin can be sensitive, so a quality diet and routine veterinary follow-up are valuable. Average life expectancy ranges from twelve to fourteen years. Buyers should request full health documentation from breeders, including parental scores, genetic panels and confirmation of identification through microchipping and pedigree registration.
Standard
FCI standard 347 describes a medium to large herding dog with a powerful yet harmonious silhouette, slightly longer than tall. Males stand 60 to 66 cm at the withers, females 55 to 61 cm, with weights ranging from 25 to 40 kg. The coat is pure white, of medium length or short, always double with a dense undercoat. The head is finely chiselled and wedge-shaped, eyes almond-shaped and brown, ears erect and triangular. Movement is fluid, far-reaching and tireless, reflecting the breed's herding origins. The overall impression must convey nobility, balance and quiet strength rather than mass or exaggeration.
“The White Swiss Shepherd is not only an elegant dog — it is a sensitive, attentive partner that thrives on the daily engagement of its family.”
